The number of Indian universities listed in the World University Rankings 2022 reached a record high, up from 71 the previous year.
The renowned British newspaper Times Higher Education worked this year on a record number of 1,799 institutions in 104 countries and regions to construct the 19th edition of the World university ranking, which was released on October 12. The Teaching, Research, Transfer of Knowledge, Influence of Research, and International Prospects indices rank institutions.
How Ranking of Universities in India is Done?
The eight parameters that make up the University Rankings include international faculty, international students, staff with a Ph.D., faculty-to-student ratio, papers per faculty, citations per paper, and employer reputation.
According to a representative of Times Higher Education, rankings are based on the freedom of colleges to participate. Some IITs have chosen not to participate. THE responded they had met with the IITs and other schools on various occasions and continue to welcome discussions with them. They have explained our ranking process to them and solicited feedback.
Top Ranking of University in India
The highest-ranked institution in the nation is the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, which is now in the 251-300 band after spending three years in the 301-350 band.
India is the sixth-most represented nation in the 2023 list, despite seven first-generation Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) continuing to boycott the rankings. Only 31 Indian universities were ranked in the 2017 edition of THE ranking. Shoolini University’s rank in India is also talked about.

In a joint statement released in 2020, the IITs of Delhi, Bombay, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee announced their decision to withdraw from the World University Rankings, citing concerns about transparency.
According to the statement, the rankings continue to reflect the world’s most in-depth examination of university research missions. 2,500 universities participated in the rankings this year, which is a record-high number considering that participation in the exercise is voluntary.
The success of this world university ranking in 2022 helps to promote international collaboration, inward investment, and brain-drain reduction while also putting Indian higher education on the global map. The sector and political leaders deserve a lot of credit for this development. The University of Oxford has maintained its leadership position for the eighth year. Harvard University and the University of Cambridge are next. This year’s rankings include 1,799 universities from 104 nations and regions, an increase of 137 over the previous year.
