Governor Devvrat to be Invited as Chancellor by Gujarat Vidyapith, an Institution Founded by Mahatma Gandhi
Gujarat Vidyapith is an esteemed institution, established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920. The council further confirmed the acceptance of the resignation of Ela Bhatt, the existing Chancellor. Ela Bhatt is a revered Gandhian and social activist recognized as the founder of the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA). SEWA is body dedicated to the welfare of low-income, self-employed women.
“In our meeting on October 4, we made the choice, after careful consideration, to respect Ela Bhatt’s feelings and accept her resignation as Chancellor,” the Ahmedabad-based University stated in a press release. The university also confirmed that Bhatt would continue in her role until October 19.

At 89, Bhatt recently resigned from her post, citing her age and urging the university trustees to seek a successor. She, a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay award, was appointed the head of this Gandhian institute in March 2015. He succeeded the then-Chancellor Narayan Desai. Mahatma Gandhi founded the Gujarat Vidyapith on October 18, 1920. He held the position of its Chancellor for Life.
