Nokia was founded in 1865 by Fredrik Idestam, a Finnish investor. The company began as a wood-pulp mill but later expanded into rubber manufacturing and electronics. It made its first international expansion in the 1950s by establishing factories throughout the world. Nokia’s first cell phone came out in 1994 and was called Mobira Cityman 900; it could only be used to make phone calls, not send text messages or take pictures. Nokia’s headquarters are located in Espoo, Finland. In addition to the mobile phones and related products, Nokia also offers communication services infrastructure equipment, software development tools and provides professional services. In 2016, Nokia is ranked as the world’s number one network infrastructure vendor by IDC, ahead of competitors including Cisco Systems and Huawei.
